For our client Only Natural we designed some nice packaging for Christmas stars and wrapping paper for the HC collection. Everything was produced in India which gave a nice third-world-feel to it.

We designed the new cover, lay-out, illustrations and made a special typeface for the letterheads. With 3 different colors bookmarkers, red, white and blue for appetizers, main courses and desserts. The cover is made with red canvas, horizontal binded, with beautiful white blocking.

Soms is een omslag zó mooi dat de inhoud alleen maar kan tegenvallen. Helaas is dat ook hier het geval. Carnivoria bevat bloedmooie foto’s van eetbare dieren, maar de receptuur is te vlak om zich met de afbeeldingen te kunnen meten. De speciaal voor dit boek ontworpen lettertypen dragen niet bij aan het leesgenot. Maar het oogt wel prachtig allemaal.
In de korte, vrijblijvende inleiding worden vragen geopperd (waarom eten we wel koe maar geen hond? Weet de mens anno nu nog wat hij eet?), maar antwoorden worden niet gegeven, zelfs geen poging wordt ertoe gedaan. Er komen 29 dieren aan bod, van kip en houtsnip tot krab en stier (gewoon rundvlees dus). Ze krijgen elk vier pagina’s toebedeeld: een lege pagina met daarop de naam van het dier, een paginagrote gephotoshopte afbeelding ervan in een vervreemdende omgeving, een pagina met abstracte spirograaf-achtige krullen, en dan een pagina met het recept, waarbij de recepttitel twee tot vier keer zoveel ruimte inneemt als het recept zelf. Waarschijnlijk is het ook omwille van de layout dat de ingrediënten niet apart staan vermeld. De bereide gerechten zijn niet gefotografeerd. In de receptuur overheerst de klassieke keuken (fazant met zuurkool, paling in’t groen, krab met mayonaise), met een enkel uitstapje naar de Oosterse keuken (krokodil massala, 5-spice-eend). De recepten zijn goed hoor, dat is Janneke Vreugdenhil wel toevertrouwd, maar van een kookboek met de titel Carnivoria had ik méér verwacht. Mergpijpjes, kalfshersenen en stierenballen zul je in ieder geval niet vinden in dit boek, daar is het toch te braaf voor. Het is een prachtig boek om cadeau te doen aan mensen die op uiterlijk vertoon zijn. En aan vormgevers, maar dat komt misschien op hetzelfde neer.

Design of a t-shirt for Uniqlo. A Japanese fashionbrand.

Peter Saville liked our design. He gave us the The Special Jury Prize! And Uniqlo invited us to visit Tokyo.

Hi, I’m Peter Saville. This is the shirt which is called Pure which I really loved. The illustration is really beautiful it has a kind of a soft, kind of a romantic feel to it. The colors are great. But also, I like the fact that the work is down the edges and always when people do T-shirts, they always think of something in the middle, and it’s interesting with this one the middle stay white, and the work is down the sides.

We are what we eat. But do we really know what we eat? And therefore do we know who we are? The makers of Carnivoria pose questions, on factory farming, on environmental pollution, on food miles and on overfishing. Questions, however, with no ready made answers. One who eats food in the 21st century is guilty by definition.

Eels for example face extinction. What to do? Enjoy it while we still can – gently stewed with herbs and white wine – or leave it alone? And beetles – why don’t we eat more of them? Delicious when fried and served with a chili sauce.

As stated, Carnivoria asks questions, but it does not deliver answers. Instead, the photographs by Mayke Swemle, the recipes by Janneke Vreugdenhil and the (typo)graphic design by Mark van Wageningen, appeal to your imagination: www.carnivoria.nl.

De mens is wat hij eet. Maar weet hij eigenlijk wel wat hij eet? Weet de mens dus wel wie hij is? De makers van Carnivoria roepen vragen op, bij zichzelf en bij de toeschouwer. Vragen zonder pasklare antwoorden overigens. Bio-industrie. Milieuvervuiling. Voedselkilometers. Overbevissing. Wie in de 21^e eeuw eet is per definitie schuldig.

Neem nu de paling. Die wordt met uitsterven bedreigd. Wat doen we? Van genieten nu het nog kan – zachtjes gestoofd met groene kruiden en witte wijn –, of met rust laten? En kevers. Waarom eten we er daar juist niet meer van? Hartstikke lekker wanneer je ze frituurt en serveert met chilisaus.
